General FAQ:

What is the difference between a CD and other discs?

A CD (compact disc) was one of the first optical disc formats and for its day was considered a very high density storage medium, holding about 640 megabytes of information. Today we have CD-ROM, DVD, DVD-ROM, Game Discs, and other variations of discs with storage capacities up to 18.4 gigabytes (DVD 18). CDs are now considered a low capacity storage medium. No matter which disc format you own proper care should always be used when handling your discs.

Why are some DVDs a different color than others?

There are currently four DVD formats and each style has its own look. The first format style is DVD 5. This is a single sided DVD with a graphic image, usually of the movie, printed on one side with the read side of this style disc appearing silver.

DVD 10 is a two sided DVD and is made like a sandwich with both read sides glued back to back. Each of these formats appears silver due to the aluminum reflective coatings.

DVD 9 is a dual layer singled sided disc and is gold in appearance. This format also uses a sandwich method but instead of being glued back to back the sides are glued over the top of each other. The gold color appears due to the gold foil used as a transition layer since it can both reflect light as well as allow for some light to pass through. This format is becoming very popular due to its larger storage size (9.2 gigabytes) and the fact that a graphic can be printed on the other side.

DVD 18, like the DVD 10, is a two-sided disc but it is very special in that it is a dual layer, two-sided disc and can hold over 18 gigabytes of information. This format is used occasionally when a great deal of information needs to be stored and the manufacturer does not want to press more than one disc. If each format were to be ranked by the number of discs pressed it would be DVD 5, 9, 10, and then 18.

Can a damaged disc be repaired?

Yes, provided the damage is confined to the read surface. AVS uses a special process in which small amounts of the polycarbonate material is removed so the laser can read the information properly. There are some fillers being used in the repair market but their long term uses are limited. We have found that our process can restore high density discs like DVD, Playstation and X-Box.

How should I take care of my disc collection?

First, store them properly. Keep your disc in jewel boxes or a DVD keep case since these storage containers were designed for the discs. When you remove them from their storage cases carefully lift the disc off the center hub so you do not crack the disc. Any cracks in the center hub area may cause the disc to fail.

How is a disc made?

There are several ways to make a disc, depending on the format, but the most commonly used method is to press into the blank polycarbonate disc all of the pits and lands that make up the information. A reflective coating is applied and then covered by a printed image. Over 99% of the disc is made from the polycarbonate layer so disc repair that affects this layer is easy to accomplish.
